Why Choose Brain Learning?

It’s time to stop asking the question of “Am I smart?” and start asking the question, “What am I smart at?”

Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.

-Margaret Mead

Independent Education Evaluation (IEE) from Brain Learning

Each member of our team of experts has worked in schools. They have participated in over 3,000 IEP meetings. At Brain Learning, we believe that children are individuals with unique learning needs. We speak the language of the schools. We know what your child’s school can and should be doing to help learning be successful. We also observe each child’s learning environment. When presenting their findings, our experts take an active role in the IEP process in order to build an educational program that benefits each child.

We strive to provide the best for children. It is important to take time to ensure that our families understand what we do and what the journey will look like.  It’s not enough to just conclude with a report and walk away. A report that only describes what a child can’t do is not enough at Brain Learning.

Your child matters to us.

We Take Our Time

Our testing appointments continue until all of our work is properly done. We understand that everyone works differently and at various pace.

We are Thorough

Brain Learning will thoroughly review all past records as well as present to ensure the future plan is meaningful and focused to what your child needs.

We are Experienced

With over a combined 40 years of experience we want to watch both you and your child grow, having the tools to overcome these challenges together.

We conduct Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE’s)

If you, as a parent of a child with a disability, do not agree with the results of the individualized evaluation of your child, as conducted by the school system, you have the right to obtain what is known as an Independent Educational Evaluation, or an IEE (§300.502). The IEE can be viewed as a “second opinion”. This means that you may ask that a professional, competent evaluator who is not employed by the school system conduct another evaluation of your child.

Who pays for the independent evaluation?

IDEA gives you the right to request the school pay for an IEE if you disagree with the results of the school’s evaluation.

Here are some other reasons you might ask for an IEE.

  • The school evaluation didn’t find evidence of a disability, but you think it’s wrong.
  • You don’t think the disability your child has been diagnosed with is correct, or you think the results of the testing aren’t accurate.
  • The school’s evaluation didn’t examine all the issues you think it should have.

When to ask for an IEE?

When there is suspicion that a disability is impacting a child’s education, school districts are obligated to conduct a full evaluation of that child at no expense to the parent. If you suspect your child has a disability you should contact the special education team at your school first. The school needs an opportunity to evaluate your child and to address your concerns. Many problems can be resolved at this level.

If your child currently qualifies for special education but you are not satisfied with the services being provided, or if you do not agree with the school’s evaluation, you have the right to request an IEE.

What are the benefits of getting an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) from Brain Learning?

At Brain Learning, we believe that in order to properly treat a problem, you must first have an accurate diagnosis.  For example, when a student has dyslexia, it is important to know which of the 3 subtypes of dyslexia the student has because the treatments are different.

It is just as important that accurate educational “diagnoses” be made in order to properly treat the problem and improve long-term outcomes for students. We are trained in the neuropsychological principles of learning and are committed to continually expanding our knowledge of evidence-based practices. The assessments we provide allow us to efficiently and accurately understand children and their needs in order to guide parents and school teams to effective treatments.

Although educational disabilities may not ever be “cured,” it is imperative that the IEP team understands exactly what the problem is so they can appropriately match goals, services, and accommodations to maximize educational benefit and potential for your child.

Another benefit of our evaluations includes learning and sharing about what your student’s strengths are. Defining and discovering what motivates your student, is of great value.
