At Brain Learning Psychological Corporation, we provide a variety of educational services to parents and schools. Learn why one such service called an IEE can serve a crucial role in a child’s education.
What is an IEE?
IEE stands for independent educational evaluation and is a service provided by the public school system, allowing parents to obtain a “second opinion” by a qualified evaluator. Because this evaluator is not employed by the school district or hired by parents, he or she is said to be unbiased. The job of the IEE evaluator is to assess the student in all areas of suspected disability and to provide his or her professional opinion regarding special education eligibility and recommendations for the student’s education. These recommendations are shared in a written report that is provided to the student’s parent and school team.
When to ask for an IEE
When there is suspicion that a disability is impacting a child’s education, school districts are obligated to conduct a full evaluation of that child at no expense to the parent. If you suspect your child has a disability, or if your child currently qualifies for special education but you are not satisfied with the services being provided, you should contact the special education team at your school first. The school needs an opportunity to evaluate your child and to address your concerns. Many problems can be resolved at this level. However, if you have tried this and do not agree with the school’s evaluation, you have the right to request an IEE.
Why do people come to Brain Learning?
Parents, school districts, advocates, attorneys, and adult students all seek our services for one reason: their questions haven’t been answered. This happens for a variety of reasons, but most often it is due to a lack of resources (time and money) or a lack of knowledge (the disability is not properly understood). As independent evaluators, many of the barriers that can impede school personnel are removed, allowing us to truly focus on the best interest of the student. Additionally, because our psychologists have extensive experience working in school systems we can “bridge the gap” between clinical knowledge and practical, applicable school-based interventions.
What are the benefits of getting an IEE from Brain Learning?
At Brain Learning, we believe that in order to properly treat a problem, you must first have an accurate diagnosis. A medical doctor would not prescribe heart medication for a broken foot (at least we hope they wouldn’t!). It is just as important that accurate educational “diagnoses” be made in order to properly treat the problem and improve long-term outcomes for students. We are trained in neuropsychological principles of learning and are committed to continually expanding our knowledge of evidence-based practices. The assessments we provide allow us to efficiently and accurately understand children and their needs in order to guide parents and school teams to effective treatments.
Although educational disabilities may not ever be “cured,” it is imperative that the school team understands exactly what the problem is so they can appropriately match goals, services, and accommodations to maximize educational benefit and potential for your child.
